History on the Run is a series of mini-presentations exploring local history, research and the people and events that have shaped Northern Vancouver Island. Inspired by the spirit of lifelong learning fostered by ElderCollege, the series brings knowledgeable speakers to the Museum for relaxed and engaging afternoon sessions to learn something new and join the conversation. Japanese Canadian History on the North Island For the past two years, Sarah Rempel and Tamasyn Kennedy have been tracing the lives of Japanese Canadians who lived and worked on Northern Vancouver Island before 1942. Their research has taken them through archival records and long-forgotten company documents, into conversations with individuals and families, and even into the bush looking for physical traces of once-thriving communities such as Englewood. Their work is uncovering stories of work, family and community, as well as the profound impact of the forced uprooting and internment of Japanese Canadians in 1942. Join us to hear what they have found and learn more about a part of North Island history that has remained largely untold.
