When the John Hart Dam and Generating Station officially opened in December 1947, it marked a turning point for Campbell River and Vancouver Island. Built by the BC Power Commission and named for Premier John Hart, the development was the first large source of electrical generation on Vancouver Island outside Victoria. Its arrival brought a new supply of power to the region at a time when communities and industries were poised for tremendous growth. In this History on the Run presentation, we'll look at the history of hydroelectric power in Campbell River, the construction and expansion of the John Hart development, and how access to abundant electricity helped shape the Campbell River we know today. From industrial development and new jobs to growing communities and increasing demand for power across Vancouver Island, the effects reached far beyond the generating station itself. Join us for a look at the project that harnessed the Campbell River—and helped power a period of remarkable change for the region. Wednesday, November 4 from 1:00–2:30pm Van Isle Theatre, Museum at Campbell River $12 general $10 Museum members History on the Run is a series of mini-presentations exploring local history, research and the people and events that have shaped Northern Vancouver Island.
