Award winning Vancouver Island historian and author Catherine Marie Gilbert will be giving a pictorial presentation based on her latest book Walrus: the Remarkable Life of Eco-Warrior David Garrick. Chaterine's talk illustrates Garrick's rare fearlessness in the face of danger and abiding concern for the natural world. She traces the influences of his formative years spent in rural Ontario and Panama that lead to Garrick's involvement with activism, journalism and mysticism in Vancouver, BC in 1971. Here, he met Paul Watson who would become a lifelong friend. The brothers-in-arms shared in life altering adventures beginning with the 1973 Oglala Sioux Wounded Knee Occupation in South Dakota, followed by Greenpeace's inaugural whale and Harp seal campaigns of the mid '70s. While also working to educate the public about the health dangers inherent in nuclear power development, he began in 1983 to visit Hanson Island near Telegraph Cove to document culturally modified trees (CMTs). Eventually, Garrick's findings provided support for the 'Namgis Nation's territorial claims of Hanson. He passed away in 2023. This presentation of Garrick's life includes numerous unpublished images from the David Garrick collection and quotes from his extensive writing that reflect both his insight and humour.
